MGA releases Interim Performance Report for first half of 2023

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has released its Interim Performance Report covering the period between January and June 2023. 

Within the report, there is a review for the first half of this year, of the MGA’s accomplishments and the Maltese gaming industry’s performance. 

The report was an extensive look into activities for the first half of 2023, with many facts and figures pertaining to the MGA's role as regulator of gaming being highlighted. 

During the period, the MGA conducted 14 compliance audits and 85 desktop reviews, while it also issued 23 warnings, cancelled four licenses and suspended another five. Nine administrative penalties were also issued by the authority, as well as one regulatory settlement. 

When it comes to responsible gaming and safeguarding players, the MGA assisted 2,Online Casino Games216 players who required assistance and conducted 40 responsible gambling website checks. 

There were 166 allegations of suspicious betting from licensees and other interested parties received, while a total of 118 alerts on suspicious betting were sent to the industry. 

The MGA also participated directly in six different investigations into sports rules violations or manipulation of sporting competitions. 

It was also mentioned that the MGA will publish a full-year industry performance report during the second half of 2024, when it publishes its Annual Report for the financial year ending December 31, 2023. 

Last Friday, the MGA announced the appointment of its new CEO, with Charles Mizzi taking on the role following a decision made by The Board of Governors, succeeding Carl Brincat.
